Abstract
Behind the considerable variety of the Provençal and French "courtly" lyric texts (twelfth-thirteenth centuries) it is possible to discover a sort of "deep structure" composed of the topoï of medieval love psychology and corresponding to a set of everyday formulaic expressions. The poems offer an elaborated version of this "semi-formulated" material that will then appear as a succession of several motifs (renewed nature in the spring, sweetness of the amorous pain, praising of the lady, supplication for love), presented with a great number of rhetorical devices. Despite the force of tradition, individual innovations will constantly surpass the expectations of the public, deviation which will gradually modify the poetic tradition itself.
